Separation involving children.

My wife and I are considering divorce. (my wife that is) I do not want a divorce. I have been told that if we choose to separate prior to the divorce while trying to figure things out the parent that chooses to leave the home and the children behind will more than likely not be awarded custody if a divorce is decided. Not sure I understand this process. Is this a true statement?
